Sage advice for a new principal, or any principal for that matter:

If you are a principal who says, "It's lonely at the top", then you are doing it wrong. Walk beside your ppl and discover their needs.

reminiscing

When I was growing up, I couldn't afford the music I wanted to listen to and our radio station really didn't play any of the music. If the night was clear and I was close enough to my window, I could get a radio station from Wichita or KC. They played the music I loved to hear.

Yes, I grew up six years behind my husband so our music tastes are somewhat different, but not really. I love all types of music, he is more narrow minded. One of the things I love about iTunes, I can finally own the music I always wanted to own and loved listening to when I was a teenager. Yes, my husband makes fun of some of it, but I also listen to and appreciate his music. He is not a pop music lover, neither am I, except for a few songs. I also like classical, blues, country, rap, and more. So nights I am alone....I am a teenager again...listening to the music I always wanted to hear.

random thoughts

I have an eclectic taste in music - my DH does not. He likes what he calls soulful music, such as Jesse Winchester, Steve Goodman, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker, etc. So do I. I also like Barry Manilow (yes, I admit it), Billy Joel, most one-hit-wonders, John Coltrane, The Band, classical, country, reggae, some hip-hop, and more.

What does music say about a person? Anything? Is it wrong for me to be so diverse in my music tastes? I have played the piano for nearly 40 years, this is when I began having such a diverse love of music. My mother was from Germany so I had to learn to play the German folk songs. My piano teacher taught me to play the classicals of Clementi (my favorite), Bach, Beethoven, and more.

My husband didn't play an instrument, only DJ'd. Does that matter?

How does one acquire their love for certain types of music genres?

5 Things I would change about education.

I was tagged by scarter to write about what I would change about education. The rules are in bold.

List FIVE changes you would like to see in the educational system. Your responses should represent your perspective and your passion for learning and students…tag the following people…from a variety of perspectives. If you have been tagged, tag as many people as you choose, but try for a variety.”

1) Grade levels would be no longer. Distinct standards would have to be mastered prior to a student moving forward. Children enter school when they are ready and leave school once all standards are mastered.

2) School is rigorous and relevant to the student. Students are in charge of their own learning with the guidance for a teacher.

3) Students interact with global peers and they help each other in through their learning process.

4) Asychronous learning in a brick and mortar building.

5) Teachers are professionals in dress, in action and in the pay they receive.
